Four highlights, one journey

Sacred places you'll visit

Adi Kailash and Om Parvat stand in the upper Vyas Valley near the Tibet border, both reached from the base village of Gunji. On the way back, the yatra adds Narayan Ashram and the Panchachuli peaks of the Darma valley.

Adi Kailash peak behind the trishul at Jolingkong

Summit ≈ 5,945 m · Darshan point Jolingkong ≈ 4,500 m

Adi Kailash (Chhota Kailash)

Its shape closely resembles Mount Kailash in Tibet, which is why pilgrims call it the "first" or "little" Kailash and revere it as Lord Shiva's home on the Indian side of the border. At its foot lies Parvati Sarovar, a still lake where the peak reflects on calm mornings.

  • Parvati Sarovar and the small Shiv–Parvati temple on its bank
  • Gauri Kund, a glacial pool reached by a short walk
  • Views of Pandav Parvat and the old Kuti village on the way
Om Parvat under fresh snow, seen from the Nabhidhang side

Summit ≈ 6,191 m · Viewpoint Nabhidhang ≈ 4,100 m

Om Parvat

Seen from Nabhidhang, the snow settles on this peak's dark rock face in a shape that reads as the sacred syllable ॐ. It sits close to the Lipulekh Pass on the old Kailash–Mansarovar route, and the marking is clearest after fresh snowfall.

  • Kalapani, the source of the Kali river, with its Kali Mata temple
  • Vyas Gufa, the cave linked to Maharishi Ved Vyas
  • Clear views on most mornings in the season; clouds build by afternoon
Narayan Ashram building with its white conical towers and flower garden

≈ 2,734 m · Chaudans valley

Narayan Ashram

A peaceful ashram on a forested ridge above Tawaghat, started in 1936 by Narayan Swami after his own Kailash–Mansarovar yatra. It has a temple, a silent meditation hall, the Swami's samadhi and flower gardens and apple orchards, with wide views over the Kali valley. We stay here on the last night, on the way back from the Darma valley.

Panchachuli peaks at sunset above the Darma valley and river

Base camp ≈ 3,960 m · Darma valley

Panchachuli & Darma Valley

Panchachuli means "five stoves": five snow peaks where, in local belief, the Pandavs cooked their last meal before heading to heaven. From Dugtu village in the remote Darma valley, a gentle walk of about 4 km along the river takes you to the base camp, right beneath the peaks.

Photos taken on our own yatra. The ॐ marking on Om Parvat shows most clearly once the heavy spring snow starts to melt.

Before you go

Permit, packing and health

The Vyas Valley is a protected border area, so every pilgrim needs an Inner Line Permit. We guide you through it step by step.

Documents for the permit

  • Aadhaar card or another government photo ID (original + 2 copies)
  • 4 recent passport-size photos
  • Medical fitness certificate (done in Dharchula or from a registered doctor)
  • Filled ILP application form (we help you with it)

Permits are issued by the SDM office, Dharchula. Only Indian citizens are allowed. Rules can change each season, and we'll confirm the current list when you book.

What to pack

  • Down or heavy padded jacket, thermals, woollen cap and gloves
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip
  • Raincoat or poncho, sunglasses with UV protection
  • Sunscreen (SPF 50), lip balm, cold cream
  • Your regular medicines, plus power bank and torch
  • Enough cash: ATMs are unreliable after Dharchula

Stay well at altitude

  • Get a basic health check-up before you travel
  • Drink 3–4 litres of water a day
  • Walk slowly at Jolingkong and Nabhidhang, and take breaks
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking during the yatra
  • Tell the trip lead at once about headache, nausea or breathlessness

People with heart or lung conditions should consult their doctor before booking.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go?

May to June and mid-September to October usually bring the clearest skies. July and August are monsoon months with a higher risk of landslides, and the route closes for winter from November.

Do I need a passport?

No. Indian citizens need a government photo ID and the Inner Line Permit. Foreign nationals are generally not permitted in this border area.

Is this yatra suitable for senior citizens?

Yes, for most healthy seniors. The SUV goes close to both darshan points, so walking is short. We recommend the 7-day package for elders because the extra nights at Gunji make the altitude easier to handle.

Is the Panchachuli base camp walk compulsory?

No. The walk is about 4 km each way on a mostly gentle trail and takes 4–5 hours in total. Anyone who prefers to rest can stay back at Dugtu village, which already has a clear view of the peaks.

Do I need a separate permit for the Darma valley?

No. The same Inner Line Permit from Dharchula covers both the Vyas and Darma valleys. We include both on your application.

Can children come?

Children aged 6 and above usually manage well with warm clothing and plenty of rest. Talk to us before booking for younger kids.

Will my phone work?

Signal is good in Pithoragarh and Dharchula but patchy beyond. Some homestays in Gunji have limited network or Wi-Fi. Let your family know you may be out of reach for a day or two.

What kind of stay should I expect in Gunji?

Clean, simple village homestays with warm blankets and home-cooked food. Rooms are shared by 2–3 people, and bathrooms may be shared. Hot water is available by bucket.

How do I book and pay?

Send us an enquiry, we confirm your dates and send the details, and you pay a booking amount by UPI or bank transfer to reserve seats. The balance is paid before departure. The cancellation policy is shared at the time of booking.
